Archival CDs/DVDs protect your memories.
All optical discs must have a reflective layer to enable the reader (player) to get the
information from the disc. Recordable media stores data in a photosensitive dye layer
that can only be read with the help of the reflective layer, so the reflective layer is essential
to the functionality of the disc. If this reflective layer becomes corroded (oxidized), the
disc becomes very difficult or impossible to read- i.e. you lose your data. Corrosion of the
silver layer is a primary limiting factor for the lifetime of standard DVD media. Archive Grade
media should be constructed so that corrosion of the reflective layer is eliminated or
at least slowed down. The Silver Plus DVD-R offers 2 reflective layers - one of silver and
another of gold. This gold layer encapsulates the silver, protecting it from environmental
conditions that cause corrosion.Gold NEVER oxidizes. The protection of the silver layer
is the main reason that the Silver Plus disc has a lifetime of 80 years.
